SCIAMA
High Performance Compute Cluster
Exercise: Mini-Challenge: Running your first HPC simulation
With all what you learned so far, you should be now able to compile, set up and run your first HPC simulation. We have picked GADGET-2, an N-Body cosmological simulation code.
- Read the SCIAMA knowledge base to find out how to switch to the NEW module tree and do so
- Download the latest version of GADGET-2 from HERE onto SCIAMA (Tip: wget may be helpful)
- Unpack it and try to locate the source code folder with the Makefile
- Adapt the Makefile for the SCIAMA environment (if needed)
- Identify needed modules and load them (hint: GADGET-2 is a rather old code and may not be compatible with the newest libs)
- Successfully compile GADGET-2
- You can find a parameter for running a simulation in the following folder on SCIAMA: /users/jschewts/HPC_lectures2018/Day1
- Write your own submission script for a 64 core MPI run of your compiled GADGET-2 binary (don’t forget to switch to the new module tree there as well)
- Check if your simulations started successfully.
- Now kill your simulation again (Do NOT skip this step)
- ????
- Profit!!! (well, you mastered the content of the first day successfully ;))
